Common Terms

Joey
A baby sugar glider.
IP
In pouch. A joey still developing in the mother's pouch.
OOP
Out of pouch. The point when a joey detaches from the nipple and begins spending time outside the pouch.
Colony
A social group of sugar gliders living together.
Bonding pouch
A pouch used to safely carry sugar gliders close during bonding time.
Sleeping pouch
A pouch used inside the cage for sleeping.
Staple diet
The main prepared part of a sugar glider diet plan.
Calcium:Phosphorus ratio
A nutrition ratio often discussed when balancing diet ingredients.
Scent gland
A gland used for marking. Intact males commonly have visible head and chest scent glands.
Leucistic
A white sugar glider color variation with dark eyes.
Platinum
A sugar glider color variation connected with specific genetics.
Het
Short for heterozygous. Often used to describe carrying a recessive gene.
